Kingdom of Heaven Bible Reading Plan

Here is the reading plan that we're using to go through Matthew between now and the May Long weekend. It includes every dissimilar reference to the Kingdom of Heaven/God in the Gospels. The passages in parentheses are the similar parallel passages to the ones in the plan. I developed the plan last week to coincide with my sermons for the next fourteen Sundays, so everyone will read what I'm going to preach from before I do.

I introduced the book of Matthew in its' cultural and political context this Sunday to help everyone best understand this ancient book as they read. The recording of this message will be available on our church website soon. Search for the date Sunday, February 6, 2011.

This is all of the text included in the booklet that the church is using.

The Kingdom of Heaven
The Life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew

February 6 – May 8, 2011

Look to the Cross for Victory

Hello Friend,

Jesus is so beautiful.

For the next three months, we are going to be discovering Jesus in a new and deeper way, and we’re going to be doing it together. What a great journey.

God is changing us. As each of us reads and considers the story of Jesus as revealed in the book of Matthew, and it’s greater context in the whole of scripture, we’ll be allowing the Holy Spirit to mature and perfect us in his image. We will grow to know Jesus better. We will grow to know one another better. As we grow in love for Jesus, we will also grow to be like him.

This reading plan will take you verse by verse through the book of Matthew. Scattered throughout the plan are more selections from the other Gospels (Mark, Luke, and John), as well as a few select passages from the Old and New Testament to give context to your reading. When a passage in Matthew is repeated in the other gospels, I’ve included the passages in parentheses beside it. These are not part of the reading plan, but you can check them out if you find it is helpful or would just like to read further.

Every day you will have between five and forty verses to read. Before you read, ask God to speak to you through his Word, and help you understand it and know him better.

As you read, consider the following questions:

1. What does this passage tell me about Jesus?

2. How is Holy Spirit encouraging me?

3. How is Holy Spirit convicting me?

4. How can I as an individual and we as the church live this out?

5. What questions do I have about this passage?

In a journal, write the date, the passages you read, and then write a sentence or two at least about the text, your thoughts from the questions above, or a prayer.

Keep your journal entries. Bring them to your smallgroup meeting, and be prepared to share with each other and be encouraged by each other’s journey as we get to know Jesus together.

His is the Kingdom and the Glory,

-Shawn
