(Read Genesis 23)
The passage is very, very clear that Abram paid full price for the land, an in front of witnesses. This is the only land that Genesis explicitly says that Abraham ever outright possessed in his lifetime. He could have taken land by military force, perhaps even when he saved Lot with his 318 men. He could have bought land in his lifetime. But he never did. The only land he ever possessed in his lifetime was a gravesite.
