Sermon on the Mount - "Eye for an eye/Turn the other cheek" - Matthew 5:38-42

Matthew 5:38-42 (NIV)

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

My Notes:

It's amazing how "nice" this passage sounds until you're the one being slapped.

Father,

Please make these words as challenging to me as they were when they were first spoken. I don't want to read your words as cliches or niceisms because they've been oft repeated and become familiar. These are real challenges, and I know that they mean a completely different way of responding to those that hurt me. I must be humble, and meek, and pure. I want this, Father. I want to live like this.
